TxGAP Board Releases Statement on Recent Incident

***TxGAP Statement on Remarks Made by Guest Speaker on Tuesday April 20, 2021***

A guest who attended our TxGAP Professional Development Session on Tuesday April 20, 2021 notified us of a general statement made by the guest speaker. The statement made generalized law enforcement in a negative connotation regarding the killing of minorities in America. We understand the current climate surrounding law enforcement and how over the last decade there has been a building of frustration for many in our communities. With the verdict in the criminal trail of former officer, Derek Chauvin, we are aware of the tension from our members in TxGAP.

As the board and representatives of TxGAP, we aim to create an environment that is inclusive and can enable constructive dialogue surrounding issues in our culture, world, and communities in conjunction with higher education. Our goal is to foster dialogue that encourages personal and professional development in our members and event attendees.

As an organization, we understand that our speakers will say remarks that are not indicative of TxGAP’s beliefs but understand the current climate surrounding civilians and law enforcement. As higher education professionals, we interact with campus and community law enforcement and appreciate the safety and protection they provide to our individual communities, campuses, and students.

As our campuses and organization become increasingly diverse, we hope to engage in conversations surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion. In the TxGAP organization, each of us contributes to inclusion—we all have a role to play in higher education, our organization, and the world. Our culture is the result of our behaviors, our personal commitment to inclusion, our curiosity, how we collaborate, and the ways that we courageously share our perspectives and encourage others to do the same in the hope that we will grow with one another.

In turn, our inclusive culture inspires us to try new things, speak openly, and be bold. It brings us together in ways that help us stand out and come together. Our inclusive culture empowers all of us to connect, belong, and grow in all aspects of personal and professional development.

Again, we value each one of our members and attendees of our events. We appreciate the viewpoint of all our colleagues and appreciate the feedback of others. We hope you will continue to join us for future events as we learn to grow with one another.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding our professional development session, please contact our Professional Development and Strategic Initiatives Chair, Victor Lopez at Victor_F_Lopez@baylor.edu.

Thank you,
